FAQ

Below we have answered some questions that you may have regarding Cork Guitar Lessons.

How Much Do You Charge?

I charge €20 per half hour although you can choose from 30, 45 or 60 minute sessions.

If you are looking for a duo or group lesson quote please ask through the contact form above.

I don’t give lessons in other peoples houses.

Payment Fequency

I follow the primary school term. Each primary school half term equals to one of my terms. So generally my terms is around 5 – 8 weeks long.

Students prepay the term.

Cancellation Policy

Students prepay the term so they should try to make each lesson.

If a student cancels I will try to make up their lesson during that week however, please be aware that I am often fully booked so I can not always make up missed lessons.

If I cancel lessons I will make up for the lessons that I cancel either via a monetary refund or by giving another lesson during the current term or the following term.

Who Do You Teach ?

My students range in age from 1st class to retired people. Please ensure that your child is at least 7 1/2 years old so that the dexterity and the necessary co-ordination needed to play guitar is there.

What Styles Do You Teach ?

I mainly play folk, rock, blues and some jazz and country so I am happy to teach these styles. More importantly I try to get you to find your own voice on the instrument.

I also teach beginner and intermediate classical guitar.

Recording facilities are also available.

When Can I Have A Guitar Lesson ?

Lessons run on weekday mornings, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings .

I don’t teach on the weekends.

We generally follow the school term however some lessons can be given over the holidays if we are around.

Having 3 young boys myself I understand the need to be flexible and will try to accommodate everyone as much as possible.

Should I Start With a Nylon String or Steel String Acoustic Guitar ?

Nylon strings are generally better to start of with for beginner guitar players. This is because nylon strings are softer on the fingertips than steel strings.

The disadvantage of nylon string guitars is that the neck is wider making it a little harder to finger chords for younger players.

How Much Should I Practise ?

If you are starting out then try to play 5 minutes per day.

Try to play every day as 5 minutes per day is better than half an hour straight one day per week.

If you can play a little bit then you need to practise a little more. How much will depend on what you want to get out of playing guitar.

As with riding a bicycle the first few weeks are the hardest but if you stick with it you will be rewarded handsomely.

Where Do You Teach ?

I teach from my house off Model Farm Road (behind the Rendezvous Bar).

I can send detailed directions on how to get there via text or email when you book your first lesson. Just contact me on the contact form above.

I don’t teach in other peoples homes.

Do You Have Spare Guitars ?

If you are interested in taking a lesson to see if guitar playing is for you then you are free to use one of our guitars during the lesson before you purchase your own.

We have both right and left handed guitars.

Why Can’t I Just Learn From Youtube ?

Youtube is a great source of information however the problem is that there is too much information which results in directionless practise.

One week you could be playing harmonic minor scales and the next week jazz chords followed by country lead guitar the next week.

Private lessons not only provides structured lessons so that you can actually play songs  and learn exactly what you want but they provide a weekly goal to achieve as well.

How Old Does My Child Have To Be For Guitar Lessons ?

Children should be at least 7 1/2 years old before starting guitar lessons.

There is a certain amount of dexterity and co-ordination required even when playing simple single note songs. Through experience we have noticed that children aged 7 1/2 or over have the necessary dexterity and co-ordination while younger children do not.
